Newspapers can be extremely valuable in documenting your family history and providing background on your families.  Newspapers then and now provide a contemporary narrative of events and the people involved in them.  They provide a mirror into the cultural, social, economic, and political life of your ancestors and the times in which they lived.  Newspapers can often help us place our ancestor in a specific place and time.  This presentation will illustrate the many kinds of events that can be found in newspapers from notices of debtors prison to ships passenger lists and everything in between.  We will also discuss free and subscription websites.  For those areas that have lost government records due to natural disasters, careless record keeping and so on, newspapers can sometimes provide a substitute for birth, marriage and death records.

Dr. Melanie Sturgeon served for 16 years as the State Archivist and Director of the Arizona State Archives and Records Management Branch of the Arizona State Library.  She has a Ph.D. in history and is an avid family historian.  As an archivist who works with government records, she is familiar with numerous primary sources that contain information about people.  As a historian, she uses numerous archival resources and newspapers to document events that are often difficult to find.  She has taught numerous family and oral history workshops throughout the state of Arizona.
